Much of the United States in the years followingh reconstruction was preoccupied with the expansion and development of on already advanced urban industrial society.In two regions of America,however,the experience was quite different. In the South the first region of the country to have been settled by Europeans and in the West,the last such region,the latr nineteenth centuryy was a time of new beginnings.
