Ibn Ridwan wrote his treatise to answer the provoking claim of a Tunisian doctor, Ibn al-Jassar d. A.D. 980), that egypt was a particularly unhealthy place, a common and ancient complaint by foreigners. Ibn al-Jassar's work is lost, save for the excerpts that Ibn Ridwan quotes in his refutation.
