in this thesis, the writer found all kinds of politeness strategies that are used by characters in this novel. thy are bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record strategy. then the characters used the politeness strategies to show appropriate manner in particular situations in an attempt to achieve and maintain successful social relationships to the hearer.
