Hybridity as a cultural indentity in the Novel Home by Leila s chudori
This study examines the representation of cultural hybridity as a
form of cultural identity in Leila S. Chudori's novel Home. Focusing on
Indonesian political exile and second generation diaspora, this study
specifically analyzes the characters of Dimas Suryo and Lintang Utara.
Using qualitative descriptive methods, this study applies Aihwa Ong's
theory of strategic hybridity to understand identity as a dynamic and
adaptive process shaped by exile, migration, and transnational
experiences. The findings show that hybridity in Home is represented
through transnational identity, adaptive cultural strategies,
intergenerational identity negotiations, and emotional ties to the
homeland. DimasSuryo, as a first generation exile, experiences hybridity
as a complex negotiation influenced by political trauma and longing for
Indonesia, while Lintang Utara represents a more flexible hybrid identity
shaped by inherited memories and multicultural upbringing. Supported
by Mieke Bal's narratology, this study concludes that Home depicts
hybridity not as a loss of culture, but as a strategic process of identity
negotiation in a transnational context.
