Category Shift in The Indonesian Subtitles of Wednesday on Netflix
The objective of this study is to identify the types of category shifts and
the most frequently occurring types of category shifts that occurred in the
Indonesian subtitles for the Netβlix series Wednesday. This study employs a
descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected from the English and
Indonesian subtitles of Episode 1, Season 1 of the Netβlix series Wednesday,
then analyzed using Catford’s category shift theory. The data were collected
through transcription and then categorized based on the type of category shift.
The results indicate that all four types of category shifts were identiβied:
Structural Shift, Class Shift, Unit Shift, and Intra-system Shift. Among these four
types, Unit Shift was the most frequent, with 26 instances; Structure Shift: 14;
Intra-system Shift: 9; and Class Shift: 8. This indicates that differences in
grammatical structure between English and Indonesian led the translator to
frequently alter grammatical levels to produce an Indonesian translation that
sounds natural while maintaining equivalence of meaning.
