An Analysis of Presupposition Types in Moana’s Utterances in the Movie Moana 2

This study aims to identify the types of presuppositions in Moana’s
utterances in the movie Moana 2 using George Yule’s (1996) theory. The
research employs a qualitative descriptive method, with the data consisting
of the main character’s utterances. The data were collected through
documentation and analysed by identifying presupposition triggers and

classifying them into six types: existential, factive, lexical, structural, non-
factive, and counterfactual presupposition. The findings show that all six

types are present in Moana’s utterances, with existential presupposition as
the most dominant. This dominance indicates frequent reliance on referring
expressions and shared contextual knowledge in movie dialogue. The study
also reveals that a single utterance may contain more than one
presupposition due to the presence of multiple linguistic triggers. In
conclusion, the study confirms that Yule’s presupposition theory is applicable
for analysing implicit meaning in movie dialogue.
