Slang Words in Deadpool and Wolverine Movie: A Sociolinguistic Analysis
This research examines the use of slang in the movie Deadpool and
Wolverine (2024) using the sociolinguistic perspective of Allan and
Burridge (2006) and the concept of the role of slang according to Partridge
(1933). The research focuses on identifying and classifying the slang used
by the two main characters, Deadpool and Wolverine, into five types: fresh
and creative, flippant, imitative, clipping, and acronym, as well as seven
roles of slang words, including: playfulness and creativity, expressiveness
and vividness, freshness and anti-cliche , concreteness, softening
seriousness, social bonding, and exclusivity and group identity. The method
used is descriptive qualitative with data in the form of dialogue in the movie
and transcripts of Deadpool and Wolverine (2024). The first research
results show that there are 69 slang data, with 50 data used by Deadpool
and 19 data by Wolverine. The second results shows that Deadpool used
slang more dominantly with a total of 124 slang roles, while Wolverine
showed 50 slang roles, where one slang word can represent more than one
role. This research contributes to the sociolinguistic study of movies by
showing that the use of slang plays an important role in shaping characters,
social identities, and the dynamics of relationships between characters.
