Transitifity Process In Fathia Izzati's Instagram Videos In Narrating Palestine

Social media platforms such as Instagram have increasingly become
spaces for political discussion and digital activism. Addressing the limited
application of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) to short-form social
media discourse on Palestine, this study investigates the transitivity patterns
realised in Instagram videos posted by Fathia Izzati and examines how
transitivity choices construct representations of the Palestinian issue. The
data consist of utterances drawn from three videos uploaded between
October and November 2023, purposively selected from a corpus of seven
videos based on thematic relevance and analytical richness. Drawing on
Halliday and Matthiessen’s (2014) transitivity framework under the
ideational metafunction, the study identified and analysed 138 processes
through a qualitative approach. The findings reveal the predominance of
material processes, which construe brutality, displacement, and
humanitarian suffering as concrete and agentive actions. Relational processes
emerge as the second most frequent category, functioning to assign identity
and attribute, construct evaluative meaning, and represent international
institutions as complicit through their inaction. Meanwhile, the absence of
behavioural processes indicates a discursive emphasis on sociopolitical
actions and conditions rather than observable individual behaviour. These
transitivity patterns contribute to recurring representation of humanitarian
crises, condemnation of Israeli military actions, critique of global inaction,
and advocacy of boycott and resistance. Overall, the study demonstrates that
transitivity functions as a significant linguistic resource for constructing
ideological representation in digital activism discourse and further extends
the application of SFL to contemporary social media narratives.
