The Allegory Of Men and Tree in The Picture Book “The Giving Tree” By Shel Silverstein

Allegory is a figurative story that presents and implied messages through
symbols. The Giving Tree is a picture book that rich in allegory that tells the story
about the relationship between boy and tree. The aim of this research is to uncover
between the symbolic representation of the relationship between the boy and the
tree as a reflection of the human nature relationship. This research use Kuiper’s
concept of allegory as a main analytical framework to uncover the human and
nature relationsip. This research also use Chatman’s theory of narrative structure as
a structural analysis tool. This research use qualitative descriptive analysis. The
findings show that this picture book contains a literal and implified meaning which
is that portrays the exploitative relationship between humans and nature, The
interpretation of the apple tree in this picture book as a representation of nature
serves as a distinguishing feature of this study compared to previous research, and
the finding further reveals that that as the boy grows older, his behavior toward the
tree changes from love and harmony in childhood to exploitation and selfishness in
adulthood. This research concludes that an allegory about the relationship between
humans and nature, depicting how the adult character as he grow older and are
influenced by modernity, transform from harmonious and loving beings into
materialistic and exploitative figures toward nature, symbolized through the tree’s
