The Usage of Islam-Related Terminology in Al Jazeera Articles During the 2024 Period

This study examines the use of Islam-related terminology in Al Jazeera
news articles published during 2024 to identify the lexical patterns and
contexts through which Islam is represented in media discourse. Adopting a
corpus-based qualitative approach and John Sinclair’s theory of lexical
patterns, this research analyzes how meaning is constructed through
recurring linguistic environments. The data consist of 28 selected Al Jazeera
articles containing key Islamic terms such as jihad, sharia, fatwa, ummah, and
hajj, which were analyzed using AntConc software.The findings reveal that all
Islam-related terms consistently exhibit the five types of lexical patterns
proposed by Sinclair, namely collocation, colligation, idiomatic expression,
semantic prosody, and delexicalization. These terms occur across three main
contexts social, political, and religious although some terms are more
dominant in specific contexts. The results indicate that Al Jazeera employs
Islamic terminology in a balanced and context-sensitive manner. This study
supports Sinclair’s view that meaning is formed through repetitive lexical
patterns and contributes to understanding how media language shapes
public perceptions of Islam.
